Yohei and Haruka, two undergraduate students who have continued their research in our lab, were selected to give Outstanding Presentations at the Yamaguchi University Festival! 🎉✨

They confidently presented the research they had worked hard on during the Self-Development Program, which gives students the opportunity to conduct research in basic science or clinical laboratories, in front of many visitors.

We are incredibly proud of both of them for staying curious, enthusiastic, and dedicated to their research 🔬
Congratulations to Yohei and Haruka on their excellent presentations!

We hope you continue to enjoy research, take on new challenges, and grow together with us in the lab!

Now that the conference has come to an end, we have been looking back on some of the memorable moments from our trip. 🍽️✨

Of course, the presentations and scientific discussions were highlights, but the meals we enjoyed in between sessions also became a wonderful part of the experience.

Trying local food and spending time together outside the conference made the trip even more memorable. By the latter part of our stay, though, we definitely started missing Japanese food a little! 🍚

All of these moments made the conference trip a truly enjoyable and memorable experience.

We successfully completed our first presentation at an international conference! 🎉🧠✨

From September 16–18, we attended the European Brain Barriers Meeting 2026 in Denmark.

Our graduate student, Aynano Sasakura, gave her first international conference presentation, presenting a poster on a BBB model derived from a patient with a COL1A1 mutation!

Nishihara also gave an oral presentation on our research using a patient-derived BBB model of HTRA1-related disease.

Beyond the presentations themselves, we had many engaging discussions with researchers from around the world, making this an incredibly valuable opportunity to gain new perspectives and inspiration.
We look forward to bringing what we learned back to our future research!

We are currently visiting Manuel Lab in Spain to discuss our collaborative research project. 🇪🇸

In addition to learning about the technologies developed here, we have gained many valuable insights into how the lab is organized and how the team approaches their day-to-day work.

One of the most inspiring aspects has been seeing students actively participate in conferences and take an active role in mentoring and guiding others. Experiencing this environment firsthand has also been very inspiring for Ayano. ✨

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone at Manuel Lab for their warm hospitality and for providing us with such valuable opportunities to learn and exchange ideas. We hope to bring what we have learned here into our future collaboration and also apply these insights to the way we develop our own lab. 🧠

Great job, Ayano! 👏

We are currently in Spain to attend a scientific conference and visit the lab of our collaborators 🇪🇸🔬

Toledo, the historic city of Spain, is surrounded by a remarkable double layer of defensive walls. Seeing these walls reminded us of the BBB—the blood-brain barrier—that we study in our lab!

The barrier formed by vascular endothelial cells, together with the surrounding astrocytic endfeet, creates a fascinating protective interface in the brain. In that sense, Toledo feels like a “real-life BBB” 🏰

During our visit to our collaborator’s lab, our graduate student Ayano Sasakura also presented her research data. Great job, Ayano! 👏

From June 25 to 27, we attended the 67th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Neuropathology in Niigata 🧠🔬

We gained valuable insights into tissue-clearing technologies developed in Japan and the pathological changes observed in the brains of patients with cerebral small vessel disease. These topics are rarely covered in clinical neurology or BBB-focused conferences, making this a particularly meaningful learning opportunity.

We were also fortunate to connect with potential new research collaborators 🤝 We look forward to applying the knowledge and connections gained at the meeting to our future research.

The photo was taken at the Center for Human Brain Resource Initiative, known as ChBRI, at the Brain Research Institute, Niigata University.

We attended the Gordon Research Conference (Barriers of the CNS 2026), which is held every two years near Boston, USA 🇺🇸🧠✨
Researchers working on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) gathered from around the world to share cutting-edge findings and engage in active discussions, making for an inspiring and intensive five days.
From our department, Dr. Nishihara gave an oral presentation and participated in a panel discussion, while Dr. Matsuo presented a poster. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas directly with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
Beyond gaining new scientific insights, we also built international connections that may lead to future collaborative research projects 🌏🤝
By fostering these global networks, we will continue to advance our original BBB research and contribute new knowledge to the international research community.
